Alternative media

It’s been a long time since I watched the “mainstream” news or read a newspaper that I didn’t buy off a shifty-looking guy standing on a street corner under a ’Socialist Worker'banner. I get most of my news from the internet; in fact, I get a lot of my news from satirical sites like The Onion and the British version, The Daily Mash. The real story may have been distorted almost beyond recognition by the time they’re finished with it, but you can usually between the lines and figure out what the original news item was – at the same time as having a good laugh!
I’ve always been a big fan of The Daily Show, too, even if some of the news was a bit too US-based for my liking. I’m not being xenophobic; just disappointed that a lot of the jokes went over my head! And now we have our own UK alternative news programme, The 10 O'clock Show.
I wasn’t really sure what to expect when I first read about the show. Most importantly, I wasn’t really sure what to make of the presenters. I think David Mitchell is hilarious (if a little middle class) especially when he goes off on rants, and I have loved Charlie Brooker with a passion hat can be imagined since the days of his fantastic website “TV Go Home – but Lauren Laverne? Jimmy Carr???
Actually, the lovely Lauren (as my flatmate insists on calling her) has shaped up quite nicely. I thought she might have been out there to provide eye candy, but actually her role is more that of babysitter, making sure the boys don’t get too rowdy and out of control. Even Jimmy Carr isn’t awful. I usually feel the man has all the charm of a man trying to sell used cars in Lebanon, but the producers have wisely restricted his role to delivering witty one liners from an autocue. Smart move!
