Smacking your child: Right or Wrong

October 19th, 2011 posted by admin

Smacking your children when they do something wrong or as a form of punishment has been around since who knows when… It certainly is a very controversial subject and one that ignites a lot of passion is many. With recent debates on the subject being brought up by my left wing political brothers I thought it was about time to fire up the laptop, start blogging and get my own opinion out there.

Recently a group of welsh politicians are raging up again out outlawing smacking. Previous attempts as this law have proved futile but they are not stopping! They say that we need to bring ourselves up to date like other countries, we are living in the past! Smacking children is so outdated and I couldn’t agree more. Surely smacking children is not a solution to anything and let’s face it what good come from it? What we need to ask ourselves is DOES IT REALLY WORK? I would say no it definitely does not but there are some that even now will beg to differ.

A study found that youngsters smacked up to the age of six did better at school and were more optimistic about their lives than those never hit by their parents.

This article published by the Times has sparked outrage amongst children’s rights campaigners who aren’t having any of it. I can’t blame them these sort of articles are full of advice from family solicitors without a clue and nonsense that only serves to encourage parents to continue to smack their children in some sort of desperate hope that they will be more positive about life and do better at school.

They were also more likely to undertake voluntary work and keener to attend university, experts discovered.

What message are we sending our children when we smack them? That physical violence is the only way to stop people doing things we don’t want them to? We need to take a modernized view on our society and start to think about how we can use other forms of punishment or reprimanding to achieve the same outcome without using violence!
