Animal Welfare & Politics
Back in 2006 a new political party was launched in the United Kingdom, called ‘animals count’ which seeks to campaign for animal rights. There political message was clear ‘”The time is right for a party dedicated to animals. Animals count – they count on you.”
In the pre-election campaign of the New Labour party in 1997 the members pledged to make changes to better the situation around many animal welfare issues, this included a ban on Vivisection (experiments on live animals). However there is light for the animals in the political spectrum, which shines in the form of the ‘Green Party’. In an analysis conducted by an organisation called ‘Protecting Animals in Democracy’ the Green Party polled joint first. Not surprisingly the hunting friendly bunch Conservative party polled worst with the UKIP coming up behind them.

Unfortunately the Conservative government now runs the United Kingdom and fighting for the rights of animals in terms of getting legislation overturned and rewritten is more difficult than ever. During the conservatives pre-election campaign, when questioned on their views and policies concerning animal welfare they responded to issues such as animal experimentation with statements suggesting they are committed to reducing it at the very most. No sign of abolishment or legislative change. Furthermore it was well documented by the party that they wanted to repeal the fox hunting ban as soon as they came to power, something they are currently seeking to do.
So in the face of adversity those who wish to fight for the rights of animals are faced with a bigger task than ever before in the UK something a pop up stand and leaflets isn’t going to tackle. So if you believe in these issues and want a change, get involved actively, it’s the only way to make a change.
